Turned it on today and thought I heard a slight whistling/scratching noise from the front. Later realised that the system was running continually when turned on. Don’t know if it’s actually working as it’s a cold day.
Any ideas?

Blower motor related? Does the noise also happen with the HVAC on a heater setting?

No, it’s only when you turn the air on. The blower fan is permanently at its lowest speed.
I turn the a/c on, the fan and (presumably, as the load on the eng
ine increases
) compressor start up and run continuously to the accompaniment of an unusual noise.

If it was the compressor the sounds would be louder. Open the hood while the a/c is on and make sure its not coming from there.

Radiator/condenser fan?

Compressor’s at the back and fan at the front so I
should be ab
le to tell which it is anyway!

Maybe so. Why would it run continually though? The car’s due for service next week anyway.

Not sure. Maybe we should back up a bit, because I’m not sure what this means either:
...the system was running continually when turned on...
What part of the system
is running “continually” and how does that differ from normal operation? Is the scratching noise constant?

Ah, forgot you have a Smart. It’s smart, should figure itself out :P

Air con usually clutches in and out so you’ll hear it starting and stopping. Until today mine did just that, now it’s running all the time if you switch it on. The noise is constant.

Dunno. Maybe there’s a relay somewhere that’s sticking, or an air temp sensor reporting a need for continual operation. Might also be a blend door issue if those are electronically actuated on these cars...
